The Citizen’s Police Academy is an educational opportunity intended to provide in-depth information about the Lynchburg Police Department and our police operations.  The course will expose you to many of the same topics and training that our officers receive so that you will better understand how the police and criminal justice system work.

This 7-week academy educates citizens on topics ranging from our values and mission to the way we hire and train officers, and even the use of force. This course gives participants an inside look into the Lynchburg Police Department, and the opportunity to meet and interact with many of our officers.

Sample Topics:
  • LPD Hiring Process
  • The Community Action Team
  • The Department of Emergency Services / How Calls for Service are Handled
  • “Know Your Rights”
  • Intelligence Led Policing
  • The Body Worn Camera System
  • Traffic Stop Scenarios/Traffic Safety
  • Field Operations
  • Use of Force
  • Taser Demonstration
  • Baton Demonstration
  • Fire Arms Training Simulator

If you are interested in future classes please complete the Citizen’s Police Application and return it in person to the Information Desk at 905 Court Street. Applicants will have a background check completed, and those with criminal histories or who are not in good standing with the LPD may be prohibited from participation.

There is no cost to participate in this program. You must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Look for more information on our Facebook Page for when the next Citizen’s Police Academy will be held.
