Lynchburg Police Department Announces Temporary Pause of Flock ALPR Cameras
Lynchburg, VA – The Lynchburg Police Department will temporarily pause the operation of its fifteen fixed Flock Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras located within City rights-of-way, effective immediately.
Since implementing Flock ALPR technology, LPD has used it to help recover stolen vehicles, locate missing and endangered people, apprehend violent offenders, and assist in numerous criminal investigations. This tool has proven to be effective in quickly solving cases and enhancing officer safety while supporting partnerships with local and regional law enforcement agencies.
The decision to temporarily pause the fixed cameras reflects the Department’s willingness to listen to feedback from our community and maintain public trust. It is not the result of any identified misuse.
“Everyone in our community has a right to feel safe,” stated Chief of Police, Ken Edwards, “This pause is intended to strengthen public confidence while continuing to advocate for modern technology and policing practices that reduce criminal activity and maintain the trust and support of our community.”
LPD will work with City staff to conduct an independent and objective third-party review of its policy, procedure, training, and operational practices related to ALPR technology.
The Lynchburg Police Department’s ALPR policy and Transparency Portal remain available on the Department’s website.
