Malicious Wounding on Polk Street
LYNCHBURG Va. — The Lynchburg Police Department (LPD) is investigating a shooting incident that occurred in the 1000-block of Polk Street, this morning.
On January 24, at 8:43 a.m., LPD officers responded to Polk Street for a person with a gunshot wound. When officers arrived on scene, an adult female was located with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital by Lynchburg Fire Department Medics for treatment.
During the initial investigation, it was determined that the suspect and victim knew each other. It appears the two had a verbal altercation that led to the shooting. This incident appears to be isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the community. Two juveniles who were present inside the residence when the shooting occurred were not injured.
David Garland III (21) of Lynchburg was arrested and charged with the following:
- Malicious Wounding
- Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
- Felony Child Endangerment
- Reckless Handling of a Firearm
- Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits
- Trespassing
- Shooting in an Occupied Dwelling
Garland was transported to the Blue Ridge Regional Jail and is being held without bond.
Out of an abundance of caution R.S. Payne Elementary was placed on restricted entry and exit. Dunbar Middle School was placed on a brief lockdown which was modified to a restricted entry and exit while LPD investigated.
